A container unloading checklist should cover three decisions: whether the load and receiving area are ready, how cartons and exceptions will be recorded during extraction, and who confirms that receiving is complete. For floor-loaded freight, the checklist needs to follow loose cartons from the load wall to their agreed destination.
Use this as an operations planning template alongside the site’s approved unloading procedures. It does not replace a site risk assessment or the equipment manufacturer’s instructions. For commissioning a new robot, use the separate pilot acceptance checklist.
Open the printable unload record or download the checklist as CSV. Both are blank templates for your operation.
Before arrival: identify the load and the receiving job
- Record the client, delivery reference, expected arrival and responsible shift lead.
- Confirm whether the load is floor-loaded cartons, pallets or another freight type.
- Obtain the expected carton count and representative filled sizes and weights.
- Note known damaged packaging, unreadable labels and products needing a different receiving route.
- Define the finish point: carton extraction, inspection, scanning, sorting or completed receiving.
- Agree who supplies the load information and who resolves discrepancies.
“Unload the container” is an incomplete instruction if one team measures cartons extracted and another expects stock ready for put-away. Record both physical and inventory finish points where they differ. The devanning guide explains the steps often included in container unloading.
Before opening: confirm the approved site checks
Assign a trained person to confirm the vehicle, load and dock checks under the site’s procedure. Record the result and any unresolved issue before proceeding.
The UK’s HSE loading guidance addresses separation from unrelated traffic, suitable loading surfaces, vehicle stability, shifted loads and communication between companies. Use the applicable site controls for opening, unloading and vehicle departure; a tick on this worksheet does not itself establish that the area is safe.
- The responsible person has completed the approved vehicle and load checks.
- The unloading and pedestrian arrangements are ready for this delivery.
- The receiving route and required equipment have been checked by their assigned owners.
- The driver, warehouse team and any contractors understand their responsibilities.
- Any issue preventing the planned operation is recorded and escalated.
For dock layout, HSE’s loading-area guidance discusses space, access, visibility and training. Apply local requirements to your site rather than treating a generic diagram as an approved layout.
Choose the unloading method for this load
| Method | Confirm before starting | Work to retain in the plan |
|---|---|---|
| Manual extraction | Crew, load information and site-approved handling arrangements | Carrying, inspection, sorting and remaining receiving |
| Conveyor or lifting assistance | Equipment fit, receiving availability and assigned operators | People still select and extract the cartons |
| Robotic extraction | Assessed freight profile, approved setup and receiving handoff | Positioning, exceptions, supervision and remaining receiving |
For robotic unloading, check that the actual packaging matches the assessed profile. A changed carton face, filled mass, loading pattern or receiving destination is a reason to review the application before relying on an earlier result. Use the freight suitability guide to document the profile.
This checklist does not prescribe robot operating settings or fault recovery. Those actions belong to the approved equipment and site procedures.
During unloading: follow the cartons and exceptions
- Extract and identifyRecord the load reference and which cartons leave the container.
- Inspect and routeKeep accepted cartons and exceptions traceable to their destinations.
- Reconcile and hand overConfirm the counts, outstanding work and receiving owner.
- Record the actual start time using the agreed process boundary.
- Track cartons at the chosen receiving finish point, avoiding double counting retries.
- Record stops with their stage, reason, duration and responsible team.
- Keep damaged, unidentified and unsuitable cartons assigned to a defined exception route.
- Record operator assistance separately from elapsed unload time.
- Escalate changed load or equipment conditions using the site’s stop and review procedure.
If a conveyor or pallet position becomes unavailable, record the receiving interruption as well as any upstream pause. The handoff guide helps establish ownership between extraction and receiving.
After unloading: reconcile before closing the record
Compare the expected count with accepted cartons, unresolved exceptions and any stock still awaiting inspection. A physically empty container does not prove that the inventory record is complete.
Hypothetical reconciliation: a delivery is expected to contain 1,000 cartons. At the receiving finish point, 980 are accepted, 12 await damage review and 8 have unidentified labels. The counts reconcile to 1,000, but 20 cartons still require a receiving decision. If five of the accepted cartons needed repeated handling, they still count as five cartons, not ten.
- Record the finish time and remaining receiving work.
- Reconcile accepted, held and unresolved cartons against the delivery record.
- Assign each outstanding discrepancy to an owner and reference.
- Record the equipment and area handover under the site’s procedure.
- Have the designated person authorise vehicle departure under the site’s controls.
- Retain the completed record with the delivery reference and shift handover.
Keep the original discrepancy and its later resolution connected. Do not change an unresolved quantity to an accepted quantity merely to make the totals look complete.
Use the record to improve the next unload
Compare repeated deliveries using the same definitions. Look for recurring receiving delays, changed carton profiles and assistance concentrated in particular freight groups. The load-baseline guide explains how to collect comparable elapsed time and labour activity.
For a shared 3PL dock, connect each record to the client and freight profile. The multi-client profile-change guide shows how to retain exceptions when packaging changes.
KRONA U1 can be assessed for recurring eligible floor-loaded closed cartons with conveyor or pallet handoff. Send representative carton information, load records and the desired receiving destination to request an unloading assessment.
